The shoes are made in Aurland, deep in the Sognefjord with a lot of good handwork at our small shoe factory. The factory was established in 1939 by Inga and Andreas Wangen. It is thus the oldest remaining shoe factory in the country. The factory was run by the Wangen family for three generations until 2008, when the current owners took over.

The leather used in all variants of the Aurlandskoen has a thickness of 2.2 mm–2.4 mm. This is very powerful and solid, and can hardly be found in any other type of shoe today. A consequence of this is that the Aurland shoe takes some time to break in, but after a short period of use it will learn to the foot, and the shoe will feel soft and comfortable to wear. Since the leather will mold to the foot, the shoe should be a little tight when new to achieve the best fit.
The leather is from cattle that have grazed in Europe, and is tanned at Sepici, Europe's best tannery. The choice of materials means that the Aurlandskoen is both robust and durable and is in accordance with our proud tradition.

Our soles, both rubber and leather soles, are attached to the shoe with a two-component adhesive through a professional process. The rough soles are extra durable and withstand the cold better, but also make the shoe somewhat stiffer. The leather sole is nice to dance on, but is slippery and not suitable in rainy weather. The rubber sole is a good "all-round" sole that is soft to walk on and provides grip on smooth surfaces.

Aurlandskoen has been produced since the 1930s. At the time, there were 19 different shoe factories in operation in Aurland and 100 people employed in the shoemaking profession. Today, Aurland Skofabrikk is the only shoe factory in Western Norway that produces the well-known and characteristic Aurland shoe, popularly called "the original penny loafer".
